“COVID-19: Mozambique’s fight against the increase in COVID infections – and a ‘five-year wait’ for vaccines”
A report published last week by the British television Sky News stress that the Hospital team in Mozambique isn’t only “fighting” against a seven-fold increase in COVID-19 cases in the country in relation to the first wave of contagiousness but there is also a lack of a functioning tracking system, lack of free trials and a rising tide of the South African variant.
In Mozambique, official data indicate that about 47,000 people contracted the virus and there are more than 486 deaths, but most people have little faith in the official figures. In fact, it is very difficult to know how badly Mozambique was hit, as there are only four locations in Maputo what offer free COVID-19 tests and only one laboratory in the city of Maputo processing the results.
There is no tracking system to monitor those who are infected and, the Hospital admissions are reserved for the most serious cases – the vast majority are oriented to isolate themselves at home.
